What's Happening at OIP

Pre Pre-Production Progress

What began as a simply inquiry about actors and casting calls has led directly into pre-production on my second feature.  Out of curiosity, I posted an online casting call for a script I plan to shoot next year.  I expected a small turnout of responses.  I got over 600.  I planned to let the call run through November, but I had to close it after the first week, just so I could process all the submissions that came through.  And that's just from a single site.

While somewhat overwhelming, it was also greatly encouraging.  It said something along the lines of, "Hey, you know you're about to make a real movie, right?"  Not that my previous feature was any less real, but it was a test, something to do, a bit of fun for myself and friends.

"Javatown" is something bigger.  I've already attached a great actor to the project.  He's extremely motivated and I fear I might lose him to his own CW show before we even begin production.  He's Ben Whitehair and you will be seeing him on screens of al sizes, I guarantee it.

Aside from casting, the other hurdle I need to clear is Budget.  My goal is a minimum of $10,000, which is still extremely low, even by current "indie" standards.  But it's workable, especialy since I plan to work on digital vs. film.  And we could get into all kinds of conversations about which is better, but the ultimate reality is that digital is cheaper upfront and allows for more progress on shooting days.  One day, I'll get to film.  But that day is not today.

One method of fundraising for this produciton is to aqcuire money through sponsored credits.  Basically for $100, someone can "buy" a thanky ou credit (along with some cool swag).  The sponsor gets to feel fancy about having their name on the screen (and should feel good about supporting independent cinema) and I feel good about having money to spend on my motion picture.

If any readers of the blog are interested in this sponsorship, email me (kben at karynbensinger dot com), and I'll send you the info.

Off to sort out casting!
